Jonny Lee Miller cast in Tim Burton’s “Dark Shadows”
May 18, 2011

Filming begins this week on Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ “Dark Shadows,” which brings the cult classic television series to the big screen under the direction of Tim Burton. The film’s all-star ensemble cast includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, and newcomer Gulliver McGrath.

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet - or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Burton is directing and producing “Dark Shadows” from a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith, story by John August and Grahame-Smith, based on the television series created by Dan Curtis. Also producing are Oscar® winner Richard D. Zanuck (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Driving Miss Daisy”), continuing his long association with Burton; Oscar® winner Graham King (“Rango,” “The Departed”), continuing his collaboration with Depp; Johnny Depp, Christi Dembrowski, and David Kennedy. The executive producers are Chris Lebenzon, Nigel Gostelow, Tim Headington, and Bruce Berman.

“Dark Shadows” is being filmed entirely in England, both at Pinewood Studios and on location.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller will feature in a behind the scenes documentary on the production

The 60-minute show is called Frankenstein - The Making of a Myth and also includes an interview with the production’s director, Danny Boyle.

It is being produced by Lone Star Productions, the company that made More 4’s Alan Bennett and the Habit of Art, which last month won best arts programme at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards.

Female Frankenstein theatre fans disappointed with filmed performance

Female theatre fans have been left disappointed with the filmed performance of the National Theatre’s current hit Frankenstein.

Whilst the theatre version of the Danny Boyle-directed show features Dr F’s monster, played in alternate performances by Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, thrashing about naked following his ‘birth’, the actors have donned flesh-coloured pants for the performance currently being shown in cinemas worldwide.

Penny Reeve went to see the National Theatre Live broadcast of the re-imagining of Frankenstein at Broadway

So, let me be honest from the outset. I loved this production. Loved it. The first time I saw it, with Cumberbatch as the monster and Miller as Frankenstein, I loved it. Then, when I’d seen the roles reversed, I loved it even more. In fact, even if the play had a face like the monster’s, I think I’d still love it. My attention was drawn right from the start, when the monster emerges from a skin like membrane, thrashing about in it for a minute or two, illuminated by lights that pulsed to the sound of a heartbeat. When he lands on the ground, isolated and alone, we are made to watch around five minutes of the monster learning to use his limbs. Now this might sound like it could have been a little on the boring side, but trust me, it wasn’t.

What was very interesting here was the inspiration for the two actors when performing this scene. Miller took his from his two year old son, and Cumberbatch from stroke/car crash victims. This really sets the tone for the portrayal of the monsters by both. Miller’s monster is more innocent and finds his feet through discovery, like a child would whilst Cumberbatch’s is more desolate and at times uncomfortable to watch, but in a good way, as we see the monster’s vulnerability in his misfortune.

James Cracknell: back in the saddle after his brush with death

Almost killed during an endurance race last July, six months later the Olympic rowing champion James Cracknell set off on an even more brutal challenge

...Friends made the trip to Arizona to see him: among them the actor Jonny Lee Miller (who, but for work commitments, would have been a member of their polar team for On Thin Ice) and his fellow Olympic oarsman Matthew Pinsent. 'What’s great about Jonny and Matt is that they’re very honest,’ Cracknell says. 'Matt came to see me in hospital and I saw him a couple of times afterwards, and he said, “I’m really worried about you.” I’ve got a lot of shared experience with him, and the fact that he was honest, and knew me well enough to know how I would have reacted to that, was crucial.’ ...
